Course Description

The primary aim of the course is to introduce students to key issues in the history of Modern Greek theatre, as well as to significant thematic areas of Greek dramatic literature that require analytical and synthetic approaches. This introduction is designed to encourage critical reflection, dialogue, and independent inquiry. Students will develop skills in investigating topics related to the history of Modern Greek theatre through the study and comparison of parallel texts, as well as in conducting dramaturgical analyses of dramatic works. Particular emphasis is placed on the synthesis of dramaturgical evidence and the formulation of well-supported conclusions.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

•    define and analyze fundamental concepts in theatre theory and theatre history;
•    define key concepts related to history and culture;
•    demonstrate a sound understanding of, and critical engagement with, significant issues in the history of Modern Greek theatre and major thematic areas of Greek dramaturgy;
•    identify and analyze dramaturgical techniques in dramatic works;
•    relate dramaturgy and theatre history to broader social developments and transformations.
